Diogo: It was great to score near my home town
F.C. Copenhagen forward Diogo Gonçalves says he had an extra incentive to get on the scoresheet in the Lions' 4-1 friendly victory over Elfsborg on Saturday – because the game was played near where he grew up.
Gonçalves joined FCK this winter and is part of the squad currently training in Portugal in preparation for the resumption of the Danish Superliga later this month.
He bagged a double on Saturday and was delighted with the overall display from his teammates too.
"Obviously it was great to score twice at a ground close to where I come from, but the most important thing was that we won the game," says Gonçalves.
"It's always nice to score but today I'm especially happy about the goals because my family and friends were here to watch the game. I come from a small town called Almodovar, which is about 40 minutes from here, so it feels like being at home.
"We faced good opposition today, but that's how it should be in a training match. We need to be challenged to get fit."
Gonçalves started the friendly on the right wing, but moved to the left flank in the second half.
Discussing his preferred position, he adds: "It doesn't matter to me whether it's one side or the other, as long as I can help the team to perform and win.
"I did that today, and although there are still things we can improve on, I'm satisfied with the performance."
