'Fantastic' end to camp – Thorup
F.C. Copenhagen head coach Jess Thorup says the 4-2 friendly win against Club Brugge over the weekend was the ideal end to the Lions' pre-season training camp.
Pep Biel's double and strikes from William Bøving and Roony Bardghji secured FCK victory over the Belgian champions – and now attention turns to the 2022/23 Superliga opener against AC Horsens next weekend.
"It was the finish I had hoped for after a fantastic training camp," said Thorup, reflecting on the game that lasted 120 minutes.
"Today we faced a team at a high, international level, who are triple Belgian champions, have played in the Champions League over past season and pick up a high standard of player, so I am very pleased with the way we were matched.
"We got off to a really good start in the game, and in the first 20 minutes I can't remember them being in our half much. But suddenly they were up there, and they showed their class and didn't have to create very many chances to score goals.
"On the other hand, we needed to make count our half-chances, but that's how it is at this level. You will be punished if you're not clinical, which served as a good reminder today.
"I told the players during the break that we had been steady on the ball, but we weren't happy with the result, so we had to go out and continue in the second half. And there were players who were pushed, some to their limits, but it was great that we were matched both individually and as a team.
"We started making the first substitutions in the middle of the second half, and the rest of the match showed that we have - and need - a really deep squad.
"So for both the players who started and who came on today, it doesn't determine the selection for next Sunday. There are a lot of choices for the coaches, and it is a good place to be right now. We're ready for the Superliga and the Champions League playoff."
